I'm getting some great travel tips from you too. La Grande Boucherie in midtown is on my list for the next trip to NYC.

Hi Jo, thanks for reading the newsletter and blog and getting in touch. There are about 240 people alive in Slovenia with the last name of Anžur. Most of the families originate in the hills around the Sava River near Litija, places like Zagornje ob Sava for sure. My grandfather, Johann Anzur was born in the tiny hamlet of Gorišče near Kresnice, where my grandmother Franciska Mohar's family came from. The records are in St. Benedict's church in Kresnice. My grandfather had two brothers who died as children, he was the only surviving son and went to America in 1911 to work in a coal mine. No record in my immediate family of a Leopold, who would be just slightly younger than my American-born dad (1923). Johann had several sisters who married, but their kids would have a different last name. However, you and I still might be distant cousins if you go back far enough with the Anžur name. I met a fascinating guy, Matjaz Anžur, a self-proclaimed knight, who says the name goes back to ancient Slavic times and someone named Anže who was "big and bad, and not good." I've realized that I will not meet any close relatives who are alive, but it's fun to meet all of the Anzur "cousins" from the area. It would be nice to meet you as well. Are you going to the SUA convention in June or planning to return to Slovenia?

Cheers, Terry

Hi there,

I have been doing my genealogy research from Ottawa, Canada for a few years now and finally got to visit Slovenia last fall for the first time. This might be a bit off the subject here, but I am curious and so I will ask you this question. My first cousin Hilda Zagorc (1930-2002) married a man named Leopold Anžur (1929-1989). I believe they are buried together in Zagorje ob Savi where she was born. Any chance he is part of your family line? My parents and sisters had to flee when the war ended so I was born in November 1949 after they emigrated. I only recently found information out about any relatives.

I have been enjoying your blogs and posts in the Slovenia Travel Forum for awhile now.

Happy Easter

Jo Peterlin Erickson
